NALGONDA: Another 32 posh buses--14 Volvos and 18 Meghadoots—are going to strengthen the State Road Transport Corporation’ fleet this year. Disclosing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, P.Narayana Swamy, Corporation’s Executive Director, said that there was good response from the commuters to the two varieties of ultramodern buses. He maintained that the occupancy ratio in RTC buses had reached a ‘satisfactory’ level. “The OR has reached 72 to 73 per cent compared to a mere 60 per cent previously. We are chalking out strategies to attract rural as well as urban people,” the ED, who was on a two-day visit to the district, said.Mr. Swamy further said that the corporation, which had incurred heavy losses in 2004-05, could register a profit of Rs.50 crore in 2006-07. Asked about the alleged failure of the RTC authorities in reining in private operators, the ED said, “ we took effective steps to stop the illegal private operations. Once 45 Motor Vehicle Inspectors join their duties, we can effectively stop the illicit operators.”
