DINDIGUL: Residents of Makkan Street picketed New Gandhiji Road here on Tuesday demanding speed breakers on the road to prevent road accidents and to control speeding heavy vehicles, particularly private mofussil buses. When a speeding bus knocked down a woman at the same spot, the residents blocked the road. They said that a schoolboy was killed on the spot on this road as a bus ran at a great speed. Even as the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation shifted the bus stop a few yards away from a matriculation school at the Yanai Theppam Junction, both private bus operators and corporation drivers did not stop buses at the new bus stop and halted them at a corner of the junction, causing a lot of inconvenience to the people”, they said. More over, they crossed the school zone at great speed without minding the school zone, they said. “Even after submitting many petitions, we have no option except to take the issue to the streets in order to draw the attention of the district and police administration for immediate action.” Two schools were functioning near New Gandhiji Road. Setting up of speed breakers would make the drivers cross the zone slowly that would certainly prevent accidents in future, they added. Traffic was disrupted for a long time. Later, the picketers withdrew their agitation as the police assured them of immediate steps and adequate protection to school children.
