Thalassery: The two-day programme to pay tribute to late writers and cultural figures of this town and nearby areas began here on Tuesday under the auspices of the Kerala Sahithya Akademy. This is in connection with the Akademy’s effort to commemorate the renaissance movement in the State.

Writer and retired administrator Murkot Ramunny inaugurated the ‘Adharayanam’ programme by paying floral tributes to Hermann Gundert at his statue here. Dr. Gundert, a German missionary, had compiled the first Malayalam dictionary. The other writers and cultural figures who were paid tributes as part of the function included Sanjayan, O. Chandu Menon, Vengayil Kunhiraman Nayanar, Murkot Kumaran, Vagbhatanandan, Uracheri Gurukkanmar, Thayat Sankaran, Moyarath Shankaran, Murkot Kunhappa, V.K.K. Gurikkal, N. Koyithatta, Seshagiri Prabhu, Parambath Rairu Nair, Pavanan Padmanabhan Thalayi, K.P.B. Patyam, Patyam Ramakrishnan, U.P. Jayaraj, O.P. Rajmohan, M.P. Kumaran, O. Abu and Chambadan Vijayan.

Debate on ‘Indulekha’

A team of literary and cultural figures led by Kerala Sahithya Akademy president M. Mukundan and secretary I.V. Das visited the places and institutions associated with the late writers.

Thalassery municipal chairman K.P. Raveendran and C.P. Sivadas were also present.

A debate on Chandu Menon’s novel ‘Indulekha’ would be held at BEMP School here on Wednesday evening. Writer and critic Sukumar Azhikode would inaugurate it.
