‘Exorbitant rate charged by headload workers’

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The State committee of the Kerala Labour Officers Forum has said that the loading charges of Rs.1.38 lakh taken by the district unit of the Kerala Headload Workers Welfare Board for the shifting of the Kollam Divisional Office of the Central Excise and Customs Department were exorbitant.

In a statement, forum president Lathif Ottathengil demanded that the Labour Department take action against those responsible for fixing the rate. He said the loading rate demanded from the Central Excise and Customs Department was five to ten times higher than the rates in the Kollam market. The incident proved that the board sided with the headload workers in demanding an unjustified rate.

The board’s argument that rates fixed through an agreement with the Labour Department were meant only for the wholesale and retail market areas was against the law.

Be it for the markets, domestic purposes or for the service sector, there was only a single system of rates for loading, he said.
