Staff Reporter
A member from Centre’s medical team visits district The report will be based on areas with high fever incidence
ALAPPUZHA: Six cases of chikungunya were confirmed in the district on Tuesday, taking the total number of such cases here to 28. There was no notable decline in the number of fresh fever cases being reported either, with 1,234 new cases registered on Tuesday. While 107 of these were admitted for advanced treatment, six were suspected to have chikungunya, District Medical Officer N.N. Murali said. As for the six new chikungunya cases confirmed by the State Virology Institute, Dr. Murali said these were reported from Thalavadi, Ambalapuzha, Veliyanad, Chathankary, Alappuzha town and Karuvatta. Among areas that reported a high number of fever cases, Mavelikara was on top with 148 people approaching various healthcare centres and the Government Hospital there for treatment. Chengannur had 87 new cases, Thuravur 58, Pandanad 55 and Chunakara 53, to mention a few. Meanwhile, a member of the medical expert team that was deputed by the Union Government last month is once again touring areas including Mavelikara and Chunakara in the district to study the vector density. The study was being done by Dr. Jacob Thomas from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), New Delhi, since there was a regular high reportage of fever from these areas. Dr. Thomas’ report would help the authorities intensify and revamp, if necessary, the present action plan, Dr. Murali said. A meeting of health supervisors was convened on Tuesday by Dr. Murali, district Collector V.K. Balakrishnan and panchayat president R. Nazar to evaluate the anti-fever programmes initiated. Twelve programme officers, one each for the 12 block panchayats, were appointed to oversee the utilisation of the Rs.10,000 given to each ward under the National Rural Health Mission for vector-control and sanitation activities.
