Sonia convinced about Mahadayi project, says Congress leader

Staff Correspondent

Project will be cleared under her leadership
People realise only Congress can ensure stable Government

BELLARY: Allum Veerbhadrappa, senior Congress leader and former Minister for Water Resources, has said the All-India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi had been convinced about the Mahadayi river diversion and expressed his confidence about getting the project cleared under her leadership.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Veerbhadrappa said Ms. Gandhi’s statement during the election campaign in Goa was misinterpreted. He said that around 7.5 tmc ft of water was allocated for the drinking water requirements of the twin cities of Hubli and Dharwad and the project had been cleared by Union Government, which later kept it under abeyance following objections raised by the then Bharatiya Janata Party Government in Goa.

“We have convinced our party president and we will make all efforts to get our share of water besides getting the project cleared under

her leadership,” he said. Mr. Veerbhadrappa, answering another question, said so far none of the Janata Dal (S) leaders had held discussion with the Congress to form a coalition Government again in the State. “I have read about it in the media. The Janata Dal (S) leaders have not broached the subject nor has the Congress. As of now there is no such thought in the Congress camp. If such a proposal comes through, the issue would be looked into by our senior party leaders and party high command,” he added.

Referring to the victory of his party candidate in the Bellary APMC byelection and in two other assembly byelections held earlier, he said it indicated that people had realised that Congress alone could give a stable Government and come out with programmes for the welfare of the people. He said several lift irrigation projects in Kurgodu constituency were pending for long and no steps had been taken to get the projects completed. About the claim of Mr. Reddy of getting funds for laying roads in his constituency, he said all the projects had been cleared during his tenure as MLA.
