Repair footpaths to help children walk safely response

Bangalore: In response to the Public Eye feature on transport woes of schoolchildren, Archana Mehendale of Koramangala says: The traffic officials and the government should ensure that the footpaths are repaired so that children can walk to school safely.

The authorities should allow school buses to be parked outside the gates on arterial roads so that children do not have to walk on the main road. Instead of making rules for the city as a whole, allow for making differential rules as per the needs and problems by taking the schools, parents, children and neighbourhood into confidence.

S. Kavitha of Nagarabhavi says: I feel very bad when my children complain of their unpleasant experience in the van. But I am helpless. I am a working woman and I have no courage to send my children by bus because of distance of bus stand and rash driving by hired BMTC drivers. And the weight of the bag … makes me think that his arrangement is better.

There is van mafia also. When I tried to arrange an autorickshaw for my children, the van driver threatened the “autowala” and discouraged him. Also, the drivers have less say in respect of uncooperative children and their parents who make them wait in front of their houses.

V. Venkataraman of Krishna Gardens, R.V. College Post says: The BMTC scheme (lending buses on hire to schools) is a boon. Autorickshaws and mini vans should be prohibited as there is no guarantee (of safety of children).

Schools should group together area-wise and hire private buses. Plus reduction of the weight of school bag will make learning enjoyable for students.

Murali H.R. says: Transportation to and from schools is a big challenge.

We should move towards de-schooling – educating children without sending them to schools.
