Telgi, two doctors convicted

BANGALORE: The Special Court trying the multi-crore stamp paper racket cases convicted Abdul Karim Telgi, the prime accused in the racket, and two doctors of Victoria Hospital — Jnanendrappa and Channakeshava, on Tuesday.

They will be sentenced on Wednesday.

This is the third case in which Telgi has been convicted.

This is the first case in which Telgi has been convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Judge Vishwanath Virupax Angadi found the two doctors guilty of taking bribe and issuing false medical certificates to Telgi to enable him get released on bail.

All the accused were convicted for offences under Section 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 7, 12, 13 (2) read with 13 (1) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

On Tuesday, the judge completed his three-day dictation of the judgment. Soon after the conviction, advocates representing the accused sought permission of the court to file bail applications.

The Senior Special Public Prosecutor of the Central Bureau of Investigation, B.R. Nanjundaiah, opposed and said the applications can be filed only after the court states the quantum of punishment.
