CHENNAI: A four-day skill course in laparoscopic procedures for surgeons will be held from Thursday at Madras Medical College and Hospital. The self-assessment course for surgeons is expected to bring about standardisation of laparoscopic techniques and update the participating surgeon’s knowledge. About 130 delegates, whose focus is on minimal access surgeries, will participate. Procedures done using laparoscope give a patient the advantage of early recovery and reduced hospital stay. “Advanced surgical procedures are possible by minimal access surgery. This conference is aimed at improving the standard of minimal access surgery,” said MMC general surgeon and course organiser Rajkumar Williams. “This conference is mainly about imparting skills and standardising the procedures. Doctors and participating post-graduate students will have to attend a workshop where they will be taught to precisely use the laparoscopic instruments and do intra-corporal suturing techniques”. At the end of the workshop a fellowship examination will be held. It will include a visual quiz, a written examination where students have to answer multiple choice questions and a viva. “All those who pass will get fellowship.” The programme, called Fellowship of Minimal Access Surgery, is being conducted by AMASI (Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India), which is part of the Association of Surgeons of India. This is the fourth skill course of AMASI. Top 10 surgeons from the previous skill courses will be invited as faculty for the next course. AMASI was founded by laparoscopic surgeon C. Palanivelu of GEM Hospital, Coimbatore. The course convener is Ramesh Arthanari of Meenakshi Medical Mission, Madurai. The course will be held in the seminar hall of Tower Block 1, GH.
