Tree rips open bus, seven killed in Tiruvallur district

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Seven men were killed in an accident involving a state transport corporation bus at Polivakkam, Manavala Nagar in the neighbouring Tiruvallur district, late on Tuesday evening. According to police, the bus swerved off the road and was torn open on one side by a tree just off the highway. The tree, which was being cut down by the Highways department, had been left leaning towards the road. However, police officials said that the bus driver was at fault for swerving too far off the road and into the protruding tree.

The vehicle was travelling at such high speed that the branch ripped open the side of the bus and injured passengers sitting on that side, seven of them fatally, the police said. Six men died on the way to the Government Hospital in Tiruvallur. Sixteen other passengers injured in the accident were admitted to the hospital in Tiruvallur. According to the hospital sources, many of the passengers suffered multiple fractures.

Three men and three women were referred to the Chennai Government General Hospital, where Ramachandran (35) was declared dead on arrival.
