Residents protest councillor’s behaviour

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM: Protesting the alleged offensive behaviour of a ward member belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, residents gathered in front of the Thoraipakkam police station on Tuesday, demanding his arrest.

More than 100 residents including many women gathered opposite the police station and raised slogans against Ramesh, member of Ward No. 1 of Thoraipakkam village panchayat. The Residents said a section of them went to the Secretariat on Monday to give a petition to the Chief Minister’s cell to complain about problems they faced because of poor water supply.

They returned to Thoraipakkam in the evening, where they voiced their grievances to the elected representatives of Ward No. 2. (There are more than one member in each ward in village panchayats.) Ramesh, who was present there, allegedly made offensive gestures to women who had gathered there and also hurled abuses at them.

The women returned home and narrated the incident to their neighbours. Consequently, the agitated residents of J. J. Nagar, M. G. Nagar and Karpagavinayagar Nagar assembled near the police station on Tuesday. They said they would not leave until the DMK councillor was arrested.

Only after assurances from senior police officers that appropriate action would be taken, the agitators dispersed.
