Scheme to issue pattas to people on government land
Permission for procession denied

Tambaram: Hundreds of people gathered at the Tambaram Taluk office on Tuesday and submitted applications seeking land ownership under a scheme of the State Government to issue pattas to those who have been living on government land for more than 10 years.

A large number of people from Tambaram and Chromepet gathered to take part in a procession till Tambaram Taluk office, before submitting mass applications for land pattas. The procession was organised by Communist Party of India (Marxist). Permission for the procession was denied on Monday evening and when the participants attempted to walk to the Taluk office, they were stopped near Tambaram Sanatorium by police.

Police said permission for the procession was not given and party leaders, functionaries and the public were taken in government buses and dropped at the Taluk office. G. Ramakrishnan, executive committee member of the State unit of CPI (M), said applicants should be given land ownership documents within 90 days of the date of application.

Selection of beneficiaries by a committee headed by Collectors would delay distribution of pattas, the partymen said, adding that all families land should be given ownership papers without discrimination.
