College teachers on fast

Staff Reporter

Chennai: Sixtyfive teachers of Pachaiyappa’s College here went on a hunger strike on Tuesday.

The chairman of the Association of University Teachers Dr. P. Prakasam said the strike was called to protest the failure of the college management to re-appoint 70 teachers who teach in the evening and self-aided courses of the College.

The College policy has been to terminate teachers’ contracts on the last day of the academic year and then re-appoint them in June. “As per this requirement, they should have re-appointed the teachers on June 13, but this has not been done,” said Prakasam. The re-opening date for the evening and self financing courses has been postponed to July.

Three streams

The College runs three streams: a day college, evening college and self financing courses.

However, following an assurance from the College management that it would consider the demands of the Association, the protestors suspended the strike.
