TAMBARAM: Chennai Metrowater will implement a Rs. 18-crore water supply improvement scheme in Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam Municipality, a southern suburb. Tapping of new sources, creation of additional storage facilities and provision of individual water connections to households are some of the key components of the scheme which has been designed after taking into account the requirements of the municipality. Last week, the Municipal Council gave its consent for making a payment of Rs. 13 lakh to Metrowater towards the inspection charges. Chairman P. A. Jayachandran told councillors that Metrowater had prepared a detailed project report on the water supply improvement scheme. The project would be executed with the help of a subsidy from the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project, a grant from the State Government, and contributions from the local body and the public. Mr. Jayachandran said the population of the local body was expected to increase from about 50,000 at present to around one lakh by 2035. Hence, the water improvement scheme has been designed , he added.
