More vehicles will be deployed in west Kochi: Mayor

Priority for sanitary operations
Call to improve health standards in west Kochi

KOCHI: Garbage removal and sanitary operations in west Kochi will be intensified in the coming days. This was announced by Mayor Mercy Williams at the Corporation council on Tuesday while replying to the debate in the council.

“If necessary, more vehicles will be pressed into service for removing garbage. Fogging operations cannot be carried out during rain. However, fogging using hand pumps during rain intervals will be carried out for preventing the possibility of the any outbreak of contagious diseases,” she said.

K.J. Antony raised the issue at the council meeting.

Mr. Antony suggested that help of the military should be sought if necessary in west Kochi. The health standing committee of the Corporation should take steps for improving the health standards of people in the area and the waste accumulated on roads should be removed on a war footing, he said.

Officer suspended

In her reply, Ms. Williams said that the health officer of the Corporation was suspended from service as she failed in her duties.

The Town Planning Standing committee would look into the rehabilitation of those who would be evicted from the banks of Perandoor canal. “There is a component for improving colonies in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The Project Management Unit, which will soon come into force, will also consider projects for the rehabilitation of the evictees,” she said.

Charges denied

Ms. Williams and CPI(M) councillors K.V. Manoj and P.S. Biju vehemently denied allegations of the UDF councillors that the civic administration failed in its duty to remove garbage from the city roads.

Congress councillors A.B. Sabu and C.K. Gopalan held the civic administration responsible for the delay in removing waste. The accumulation of waste on the roads was one of the main reasons for the spreading of fever in the city, Mr. Sabu said. He accused the civic administrators of making health officer Dr. Santha, who was suspended from the service recently, a scapegoat for the failure of the administration.

V.J. Hycinth, N. Venugopal, K.X. Francis and K.V.P. Krishnakumar took part in the discussions.
