Accused to be shifted to prisoner’s cell

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police on Tuesday got a team of doctors to examine ‘Kannanmoola’ Rajesh, declared a ‘known rowdy’ under the provisions of the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Ordinance, at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) here.

Rajesh had been admitted to a deluxe room at the MCH on June 12 on the recommendation of a senior orthopaedic doctor. He arrived at the MCH casualty for treatment on June 11 on the ground that he had a spinal cord ailment and was admitted as an in-patient the next day. The city police served him the preventive detention order issued by the District Collector at the MCH.

The police requested the MCH authorities to move Rajesh to the hospital’s special cell for prisoners. However, the request was turned down on the ground that Rajesh’s medical condition did not allow him to be shifted.

Medical College Superintendent A. Nizzarudin constituted a three-member medical board to examine Rajesh on the request of Deputy Commissioner of Police Harshita Attaluri. The board Tuesday concluded that Rajesh was under no ‘life-threatening’ condition and could very well be shifted to the prisoner’s cell.

The board of doctors also found that Rajesh did not suffer from any deformity of the spine. There was also no ‘neurological deficit’ in his lower limbs. However, there was some evidence of arthritis.

Anti-goonda drive on

The police on Tuesday arrested Sajith Kumar of Kannettumukku under the provisions of the ordinance. An official said he is accused in several cases, including attempt to murder and violation of the Arms and Explosives Act. The police also checked two hotels in Kovalam for a gang leader against whom the District Collector had recently issued a warrant.
