Nature’s fury: Residents prepare to flee as high waves batter the Poonthura beach in the city on Tuesday.
Thiruvananthapuram: The district administration, on Tuesday night, evacuated 92 families at Poonthura to a relief camp as strong waves pounded coastal areas in the city. Sea erosion has been reported from Cheriyamuttom, Panathura and Beemappally. At Cheriyamuttom, officials scrambled to line up sandbags along the sea front in an attempt to stop houses from being washed away. Attempts to hold the waves at bay continued late into Tuesday night. At Poonthura, the waves destroyed 17 houses. Forty-two others were damaged. The displaced families at Poonthura have been housed at a nearby study centre for fishermen. The district administration arranged for food packets to be delivered to the families. “Though the sea has been rough all along coastal areas in the city we had to open a camp only at Poonthura. Initially, 64 families were evacuated. By 10 p.m., 28 families were evacuated,” Thiruvananthapuram Tahsildar C. R. Krishnakumar said. The number is expected to go up if the sea continues to be rough. Officials of the district administration have been asked to monitor the situation at Cheriyamuttom, Panathura and Beemappally. “We are ready to tackle any emergency that may arise,” Mr. Krishnakumar said. The present situation did not call for the setting up of medical camps in the areas hit by sea erosion, he added.
