dated June 21, 1957: New third class coaches

The third class sleeping berths to be provided in the proposed new sitting-cum-sleeping coaches in trains will be fitted with two-inch thick foam cushions covered by rexine. This marks a break with the century-old tradition of providing only wooden benches for third class passengers. The new sitting-cum-sleeping accommodation is being introduced on eight pairs of trains. On the broad gauge system, the sitting-cum-sleeping third class coaches will have a separate luggage room, with a collapsible door and a seat for an attendant. A special conductor will be in charge of each coach.
