Corrections and clarifications

In a piece “When the numbers do not add up” (Editorial, June 20, 2007), it was stated that the United National Progressive Alliance is made up of seven regional parties. It should have been eight.

>>In a report “[Election] Commission notifies Presidential election” (June 17, 2007), it was stated that the total value of votes in Parliament comes to 10,98,882. The ruling United Progressive Alliance has got over 5.13 lakh votes, while the Opposition National Democratic Alliance has over 3.54 lakh votes. In another report, “[Pratibha Patil] Likely to file nomination on June 23 or 25” (June 18, 2007), it was stated that the UPA/Left parties/Bahujan Samaj Party command the requisite 50 per cent plus of the total votes in the electoral college. Confusion arose as 50 per cent of the total value of votes would be 5.49 lakh plus votes. The clarification is that both reports are correct. The UPA has a majority: It has 10.98 lakh votes. While the UPA-Left combine has over 5.13 lakh votes, the UPA-Left-Mayawati combine has 5.74 lakh votes, 24,803 votes above the half-way mark.

>>Referring to a Guardian report “How the world watches television” (Op-Ed, June 20, 2007), the expansion of CSI is “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” (commonly referred to as “CSI” or “ CSI: Las Vegas”. It is a popular Emmy Award-winning CBS television series that trails the investigations of a team of Las Vegas forensic scientists as they unveil the circumstances behind mysterious and unusual deaths and crimes committed. The series is known for its unusual camera angles, editing techniques, hi-tech gadgets, detailed technical discussion, graphic portrayal of bullet trajectories, blood spray patterns, organ damage, methods of evidence recovery and crime reconstructions. This technique of shooting extreme close-ups, normally with explanatory commentary from one of the characters is referred to in the media as the “CSI shot”. “CSI” is produced in partnership with the Canadian media company Alliance Atlantis. On May 16, 2007, CBS renewed the show for an eighth season.

>>In connection with an article “Speaking of Science – Cram schools and entrance exams” (Science & Technology page, June 14, 2007), an additional url of the book “One Hundred Reasons to be a Scientist” (which can be downloaded free) is: http://users.ictp.it/■krs/100reasons.pdf .

>>A report “Police in dilemma over helmet rule in rural areas” (Chennai city, June 19, 2007, page 4) had erroneously mentioned that two youths on a 150cc bike died of head injuries when their bike fell after the engine suddenly seized as it ran out of petrol. Engine seizure is a different, more serious problem when compared to the engine stalling due to a sudden shortage of fuel supply. The report should have stated that the engine stalled as it ran out of petrol.

In the same report, a sentence was: “A family of four persons on a 125-cc motorcycle from Kancheepuram to Chennai were killed after their vehicle was lived in an accident with another motorcycle near Wallajahbad.” It sho uld have been “involved in”.

>>In a report “I have matured as a player” (“Sport”, June 20, 2007), a profile of tennis player Somdev Dev Varman, the expansion of NCAA is National Collegiate Athletic Association.

>>In The Hindu Crossword 8944 (June 20, 2007), clue 29 Across read as “Inviting ducks a section (6)”. It should have been “Inviting ducks in a section (6)”.
