Police told to be people friendly

Stations asked to act as ‘counselling centres’

Workshop for police and forest staff on June 23

Madikeri: Superintendent of Police Thrilok Chandra, who took charge recently, said on Wednesday that efforts were on to make police people friendly.

He told The Hindu that policemen had been told to be courteous to the people, including those visiting police stations to file complaints. Policemen had been told to treat women with respect. If any lapse with regard to handling cas es concerning women and children were noticed, the officer concerned or the staff would be dealt with seriously.

Dr. Thrilok Chandra said that he had asked policemen to visit homes of aged persons in rural and urban areas, whose children were away from them.

Besides, increasing night vigils, special visits would be given by policemen to inquire about the health and living condition of aged persons. Information on such people in the district was being collected.

Dr. Thrilok Chandra said that a presentation on the plans of the police for safety and security of the people would be soon telecast on the local cable TV network. The help and cooperation of the people, media in particular, was needed. Instructions had been passed on to each police station to act as a “counselling centre”, he added.

A recent workshop on sensitisation was addressed by a High Court judge here.

Citizens’ committees had been revived, which would involve police-people interaction in every village. Every village would be covered under this concept. It would help sort out even minor problems among people in the villages, Dr. Thrilok Chandra said.

He said citizens’ committee meetings would be held regularly in Virajpet.

Dr. Thrilok Chandra said that a workshop for police and forest staff would be held in Virajpet on June 23 to apprise staff and officers of both departments of various aspects of preventing crime and offences. KSRP platoons would be made more effective. The meeting would discuss prevention of border crimes as well.

On ganja cultivation in the forest areas in the district, especially close to Kerala borders, Dr. Thrilok Chandra said that he would initiate action in this regard.
