Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has taken exception to what it described as the “deliberate attempts” to discredit the party and its leader the late P.K. Vasudevan Nair over the Munnar issue. State secretary of the party Veliyam Bhargavan said in a statement here on Wednesday that the CPI had applied for only four cents of land and not for 14 cents as was being made out. He contended that the application which Vasudevan Nair gave was for four cents of land. He alleged that there was conspiracy behind its correction to 14 cents. Even news reports on the issue mentioned the correction. The party had purchased seven cents of land in 1959 in the name of its then secretary M.N. Govindan Nair. Four cents of land along with it was in the party’s possession. It was for this four cents which was in the party’s possession since 1959 that it gave application in 1998. Mr. Bhargavan said it was clear from newspaper reports that some vested interests falsified the records to create the impression that the entire land in its possession, including the land purchased by it in 1959, was encroachment. He wanted the falsification of the records to be probed and action taken against those responsible for it. Meanwhile, State executive of the party is meeting on Thursday and the State council from June 22 to 24. The meetings will be held in the M.N. Smarakam here.
