Staff Reporter

REVIEW MEETING: Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veerasamy at a meeting on rehabilitation of tsunami victims in Chennai on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: Construction of houses in south Chennai for 13,000 families affected by the tsunami will be taken up soon, Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veerasamy said on Wednesday.

At a meeting organised to discuss rehabilitation of the tsunami victims here , he said the Slum Clearance Board would take up the work.

The meeting decided that 960 tenements constructed by the Board at a cost of Rs 20.88 crore at Tondiarpet on the land given free by Hindustan Lever Limited and 432 tenements constructed at Tilakar Nagar be allocated to those who were temporarily rehabilitated in a place in Ernavur. Before this month-end, the families from this area would be rehabilitated and settled.

The tsunami-affected families of north Chennai should be selected for the remaining 401 tenements. The selection should be made on the basis of the number of adult members in the family. The allotment and settlement of these beneficiaries should be completed before the month-end.

A total of 1,106 more families were there in north Chennai, and they would be settled in tenements to be constructed on the land belonging to AIR at Tiruvottiyur, it was decided.

All over the State, 54,200 families were rendered homeless. For them, 28,000 houses were being constructed, and 22,000 of them had been handed over to the Government. The remaining houses were in various stages of construction, which continued with the help of non-governmental organisation.
