Canas upset; Henin, Mauresmo advance

Bhupathi-Gimelstob duo crashes out in the first round at Nottingham

’S-HERTOGENBOSCH (The Netherlands): Unseeded German Michael Berrer caused the upset of the day at the Ordina Open, beating the third-seeded Argentine Guillermo Canas 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.

In the doubles, top-seeded Leander Paes and Martin Damm survived a huge scare against the unseeded French pair of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Devilder, prevailing 6-7(1), 7-5, 13-11 in the first round.

At Nottingham, the fourth-seeded pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Justin Gimelstob made a shocking first round exit, losing to British wildcards Joshua Goodall and Ross Hutchins.

The Indo-American duo squandered a one-set lead to go down 7-5, 4-6, 8-10 in a match that lasted a little more than one-and-a-half hours.

Meanwhile, Tim Henman’s return to form proved short-lived, as he went down 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-2 to big hitting Russian Dmitry Tursunov in the second round.

Justine Henin brushed aside mis-givings about the quick annual changeover from clay to grass as she mowed down Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-1 at the Eastbourne Championships.

The top-seed was joined as a winner by Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo, who dispatched Italian Mara Santangelo 6-2, 6-3.
