For those who have missed the last date for submitting forms to most “conventional” courses, Jamia Millia Islamia offers hope through a range of unconventional career options. And there is still ample time to apply. Certificate and diploma courses in Tourism and Travel Management are two such programmes that have been attracting a lot of students ever since they were launched by Jamia four years ago. The duration of both the courses is one year with 30 seats being offered in each programme. The fee structure for the certificate course is Rs.13,000, while for diploma it is Rs.16,000. “The market for tourism and travel management is expanding. There are many lucrative employment opportunities in airlines, travel agencies, hotels, tourist departments, as well as escort services and tour operators. Students who study the certificate and diploma courses get placed within no time,” says course coordinator Inayat Zaidi. “In addition to classroom teaching, practical knowledge of foreign languages, different customs and cultures, field tours and computerised reservation system is a major value-addition to the course content,” adds Prof. Zaidi. Students who have scored an aggregate of 45 per cent and above in Class XII can apply for the certificate course, while the eligibility for the diploma course is graduation in any stream or Class XII with a certificate in Tourism and Travel Management with at least 45 per cent aggregate marks. The last date for applying is July 31. In collaboration with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer, IIT Delhi’s Appin Security Group -- a start-up company in the field of Information Technology security – recently set up its first research and development facility dedicated to information security. This R&D Centre has been established in the Technology Business Incubator at IIT Delhi, which nurtures and promotes start-ups and budding entrepreneurs, said a release. The new facility will aim at providing automated solutions for securing confidentiality and integrity of the data stored in computers and communications over networks. “The R&D facility will provide excellent security solutions to both private and government sector enterprises across industries. It would help the corporate, small and medium enterprises and government institutions to secure their organisation, information and people against data thefts, attacks and frauds,” said Prof. S.K. Gupta, Head of Information Security Research Group at IIT. Sale and receipt of common pre-admission forms and information bulletins at Delhi University was wrapped up on June 15. A number of student outfits and private companies had put up their “help desks” to assist the students in the process. In the middle of all the buzz regarding admission, the University’s Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre in collaboration with the Delhi State AIDS Control Society and YouthV.com had made an attempt to sensitise the youth towards HIV/AIDS by putting up an information stall at the Faculty of Arts on the North Campus. The counsellors at the stall distributed leaflets and pamphlets providing information on different issues related to HIV/AIDS among students and answered their different queries. “Both male and female students turned up in equal numbers without any hesitation and asked several questions. Some were also keen on getting their tests done,” said Ritu Yadav, one such counsellor at the stall. Expressing concern over the issuance of notices to 11 students by the administration, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association has appealed to the authorities and the students’ union to resolve all issues amicably. “We feel that the issues between the JNU Students’ Union and the administration were being resolved through dialogue and negotiations in the right spirit, which should not be lost through any hasty or one sided action. JNUTA appeals to both the sides to resume the dialogue and resolve all issues in the spirit of reason and academic well being of the University,” said JNUTA president Chaman Lal. JNUTA has also demanded immediate release of Binayak Sen, general secretary of the Chhattisgarh unit of People’s Union for Civil Liberties, who was arrested in mid-May for his alleged involvement with naxalite violence. “Dr. Sen, who had been part of the JNU faculty a few years earlier, has been arrested on the excuse of having association with Maoists in the State. JNUTA feels that the Chhattisgarh police is crossing all limits of proper conduct and is creating terror in the State by its arbitrary arrests,” said Prof. Lal. - Parul Sharma
