Thiruvananthapuram: Construction of artificial reef off the coast of Kovalam and development of Varkala-Kappil beach are among the 22 coastal tourism projects that have been proposed under the tsunami rehabilitation programme by Kerala Tourism. Replying to questions in the Assembly on Wednesday, Minister for Tourism and Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that beautification of Kovalam beach and Shanghumughom-Veli stretch at a cost of Rs. 2.73 crore and Rs. 7.55 crore respectively had also been proposed under the scheme. Work to begin soon
The Minister said that steps for granting administrative sanction for six projects had been initiated already and work would commence this financial year itself. Other coastal projects are development of Nattika beach ( Rs. 1 crore), Beypore (Rs. 5.23 crores), Muzhuppilangad (Rs. 6.40 crores), Bekal (Rs. 8.14 crores), Kollam beach (Rs.4.66 crores), Alappuzha beach ( Rs. 6.50 crores), Andhakaranazhi beach (Rs. 4.31 crores), Fort Kochi (Rs. 9.05 crores), Cherai beach (Rs. 4.04 crores), Munabam beach (Rs. 3.68 crores), Munakal Kodungaloor (Rs. 2.70 crores) and Padinjarekkara beach (Rs. 1.04 crores), Kozhikode beach (Rs. 7.28 crores), Kappad beach (Rs. 7.35 crores), Thalacherry-Dharmadom (Rs. 4 crores), Payambalam beach (Rs. 1.57 crores), Meenkunnu (Rs. 1.05 crores) and Valiyaprambu, Kasaragode (Rs. 2 crores). The Minister said development of six beaches in the State had been taken up under the Union Government’s beach tourism circuit programme. The beaches to be developed include Shanghumughom (Rs. 157 lakhs), Cherai (Rs. 100 lakhs), Nattika (Rs. 103.50 lakhs), Payyambalam (Rs. 103 lakhs) and Meenkunnu (Rs. 89.50 lakhs). The State Government has already given administrative sanction for the development of Nattika beach.
