Lecturer commits suicide

Staff Reporter

Husband, brother-in-law and parents-in-law booked

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old lecturer at Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, who was allegedly being harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry, committed suicide by injecting herself with some poisonous substance at Shakarpur here on Tuesday.

Ashu was found dead in her one-room rented accommodation when her brother-in-law Gaurav returned from work in the evening. Ashu had married Sourabh Maheshwari on February 6 and the couple along with Gaurav lived in the same house in Shakarpur.

“Gaurav, a pharmacist apprentice at Batra Hospital, left for work in the morning as usual. When he returned around 7-30 p.m. and knocked at the door, there was no response. He then alerted some neighbours who broke open the door. Ashu was found lying dead on a bed. A suicide note recovered from the spot said no one was responsible for her death," said a police officer.

Sourabh had gone to meet his parents at Hathras in UP on Sunday and was not present at the time of the incident. However, Ashu’s parents alleged that she was being harassed by her in-laws for not bringing enough dowry and was even beaten up on a few occasions. “Sourabh’s family made false claims about his job at the time of marriage. He was actually working with a private firm and left the job two months after the marriage. He then began harassing her and even beat her up demanding money to set up his own business in computer spare parts. He recently demanded Rs. 1 lakh, but she refused," alleged Ashu’s father Anil Maheshwari, a resident of Ashok Nagar. Mr. Maheshwari said her in-laws did not even inform them about the suicide and they came to know about it through their neighbour. “One of our neighbours had gone to see a relative in a hospital on Tuesday night and happened to spot my daughter. He then informed us about it," said the father.

The police have booked Sourabh, Gaurav and their parents.
