dated June 22, 1957: Vinoba at Guruvayoor

Acharya Vinoba Bhave, who is now on a padayatra in Kerala, refused to enter the Guruvayoor temple, about 20 miles from Trichur, because, according to the existing rules, non-Hindus are not allowed to enter Hindu temples. Acharya Bhave told the Manager of the Guruvayoor Devaswom, who had come to take him to the temple on June 20, that though he was very pious he did not want to go to temples where non-Hindus were not allowed. The Bhoodan leader said that religion should keep its door open to all. Otherwise it had no scope for expansion. He recalled the olden days when Harijans were denied entry into temples. “Now that order has changed and I hope that ere long the doors of the Hindu temples would be opened to non-Hindus also.”
