Puducherry: A meeting of the Coordination Committee of the Village Panchayats of Puducherry and Karaikal districts will be held on Friday to finalise agitations for the non-devolution of financial and administrative powers to the local bodies in the Union Territory. Its convener K Nagamuthu and deputy convener K.A. Jagannathan said in a release here on Thursday that although it was one year since the local bodies were formed, nothing had been done so far. The elections, held after a gap of 38 years, brought into existence 98 village panchayats and 10 commune panchayats besides five municipal councils in Puducherry and Karaikal. A total of 1,138 elected representatives had assumed office in the civic bodies. But the administration had not come forward to confer the constitutionally recognised authorities and powers to them. This was a violation of the concept of Panchayati Raj and spirit of the Constitution.
