NO SWEAT: Justine Henin had an easy outing against Nicole Vaidisova and advanced to the semifinals of the Czech Republic at Eastbourne.
EASTBOURNE: Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo moved closer to a possible final at the Eastbourne Championships as the powerhouse pair beat eager young opponents in straight-set quarter-final wins on Thursday. Top-seed Henin schooled teenaged Nicole Vaidisova on the grass, administering a 6-2, 6-2 lesson to the world No. 14. The Belgian, basking in the glow of her fourth French Open title in the past five editions, remains an undefeated 6-0 at Devonshire Park after winning the Wimbledon tune-up event at her 2006 debut. World No. 2 Mauresmo finessed her way out of danger after going down a second-set break against 20-year-old Shahar Peer to defeat the Israeli sixth seed 6-3, 6-4. Mauresmo won Wimbledon last summer over Henin, who is still looking to claim the lone grand slam title that has eluded her. Petrova in semifinals
Mauresmo plays for the final on Friday against third seed Nadia Petrova, who staged a comeback over three hours and two injury timeouts (back and thigh problems) to finally beat Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-7 (6/8), 7-5, 6-4. Mauresmo leads her series with the Russian 5-4, losing their last two meetings. Henin had an easier time over Vaidisova.
The 25-year-old will Friday face France’s Marion Bartoli, an easy winner over Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva 6-1, 6-0. Ruthless Henin
Henin was ruthless in grinding out victory in less than an hour, her third without the loss of a set against Vaidisova. She started with a 5-0 lead in the opening set. The Belgian dominated with four breaks of the Czech’s serve. Vaidisova donated a fifth double-fault to hand over a match point, which Henin took with a winner to advance. “I never let her find a good rhythm and get into the match,” said the winner. “I’m enjoying my game, this was the match I needed to play. I’m gaining confidence on the grass even if this is a surface where you need more t han two or three days to get used to it.” The results (quarterfinals): At Eastbourne (WTA Eastbourne International): Justine Henin bt Nicole Vaidisova 6-2, 6-2; Marion Bartoli bt Elena Dementieva 6-1, 6-0; Nadia Petrova bt Sybille Bammer 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-4 ; Amelie Mauresmo bt Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-4 At s’-Hertogenbosch (Ordina Open): Men: Julien Benneteau bt Michael Berrer 7-6 (2), 7-5; Ivan Ljubicic bt Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-3. At Nottingham (ATP Nottingham Open): Ivo Karlovic bt Juan Martin del Potro 7-6(10), 7-5. — Agencies
