Yudhishthir sets new record

Margao: The rain came in spurts and so did the records on the opening day of the 24th sub-junior National swimming championship at the Fatorda pool here on Thursday.

Yudhishthir Jaisingh of Maharashtra set the tone with a record in the 200 metres freestyle for boys’ group III clocking 2:15.58 seconds. He bettered Saurab Sangvekar’s year-old mark of 2:17.44 secs.

The seventh standard boy from Bombay Scottish School and training under Smitha Digvikar at the Otters Club in Bandra (Mumbai), staved off a late challenge from Sachin Kumar Maurya of Uttar Pradesh in the final moments.

As if on cue, Praima Kullali of Karnataka bested Surabhi Tipre’s mark in the 200m freestye for girls’ group III. The Nihar Amin-coached girl, a seventh standard student of the Presidency School (Nandi Layout, Bangalore) timed 2:20.80 secs.

“My coach expected me to time 2:18 plus for the distance and I did only 2:20.80 secs, nevertheless I’m thrilled,” said Pratima.

Sagar in good form

Sagar Kumar of Assam and Gauri Desai of Maharashtra were the others to set the pool ablaze. Sagar, a fifth standard student from Assam, clipped 0.04 secs off Arjun’s four-year-old mark of 40.66 secs in the boys’ group IV 50m breaststroke event.

Sagar was well warmed up for the event with a silver finish in the 50m butterfly earlier. Gauri brought the curtains down on the day’s events with a record in the 100m breaststroke for girls’ group III, clocking 1:25.25 secs and bettering Purva Shetty’s mark of 1:25.43 secs set in 2005.

There was lone record in diving as well. At the Campal Pool in Panjim, Swati Vidap of Maharashtra totalled 213.85 points in group III girls’ high board event. She pegged back record-holder N. DivyaTheja of Karnataka to the second place. Divya could muster only 192.20 points, which was way behind her record of 199.20 points.
