FCI, ONGC enter semifinals

NEW DELHI: Akash Malhotra hit an unbeaten 87 to help Food Corporation of India (FCI) defeat Sonnet Club by 72 runs in the quarterfinals of the DDCA Hot Weather cricket tournament at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Thursday.

After scoring 218 for seven in 40 overs, FCI ran through the Sonnet Club batting-order as Pankaj Thakur took three wickets. Malhotra also chipped in with two wickets as Sonnet folded up for 146.

In the semifinals, FCI will meet Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Friday.

Virender Sehwag spurred ONGC into the last-four stage with a 21-ball 55 with four sixes and four fours as it posted 255 for six in 35 overs at the St. Stephen’s College ground.

Sehwag then took two wickets for five runs, while his Delhi Ranji teammate, Amit Bhandari took three for 30.

The scores: Quarterfinals: Food Corporation of India 218 for seven in 40 overs (Akash Malhotra 87 not out) bt Sonnet Club 146 in 35 overs (Naman Sharma 47, Rahul Diwan 42).

ONGC 255 for six in 35 overs (Virender Sehwag 55, Sandeep Sharma 64, Radhey Shyam Gupta 62) bt Subhania Club 137 for nine in 35 overs.
