THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will direct the police not to harass two-wheeler riders for not using helmets, Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas has said. Replying to a question of M. Murali (Congress) in the Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Thomas said he would take up the issue with Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The Minister said he and Mr. Murali were two-wheeler riders and were aware of their problems, but the Government had to abide by the court directive. The Government had filed an affidavit in the court. He denied Mr. Murali’s allegation that the Government had failed to convince the court on the issue. The Government was trying to avoid middle-men in Regional Transport Offices. Steps would be taken to computerise driving tests. Computerisation of 61 Motor Vehicle Department offices had been completed. The Government was considering a proposal to set up a Joint Regional Transport Office in each taluk. The rules for Road Safety Authority would be framed soon. The KSRTC would buy 100 buses and scrap 500 buses this year. Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran said the Government was planning to hike the drinking water cess. Excise Minister P.K. Gurudasan said the Government had sanctioned four IMFL outlets and 34 bars. The Excise Department had registered 148 cases on drugs peddling between January 1 and December 31, 2006 and arrested 149 persons.
