The Army seems to be the talk of the town this week. No patient was turned back at any of the Army-run medical camps in the State. Treatment was free, medicines were in plentiful supply and the Army’s doctors were an example of efficiency and empathy. The Army’s Deputy Director of Medical Services, Brigadier Pradeep Kumar, said patients with throat congestion and minor skin and eye ailments had turned up in large numbers at the camps. Most of the cases were not fever related. The Army treated nearly 4,000 patients between June 10 and June 11 in medical camps in Thiruvananthapuram district alone. The number of patients was much higher in the Army-run medical camps in Kollam and Pathanamthitta. The Army airlifted more medicines from Pune, mostly cough syrup and vitamin pills, after analyzing the ‘patient pattern’ at its camps. In the initial phase, it supplied nearly two tonnes of medicines. The Brigadier visited all medical camps in the affected districts. He interacted with the district administration and also State Health Department officials. The Brigadier was all praise for the State Government’s disease control strategy and the dedication of Health and Revenue department officials. G. Anand
