Technical university for workers sought

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The Indian National Trade Union Congress has demanded immediate setting up of workers’ technical university so that 40-crore workforce of the country will benefit out of skill upgradation and improvement in productivity.

At a press conference here on Thursday, Guntur district INTUC president Vissa Kranthi Kumar said that in May a committee appointed by Union Government had given a recommendation for setting up technical university that would function on the lines of universities in China and United States.

“Our main demand is to set up the university at Hyderabad and form 13 regional centres to cater to entire working population,” he said. The Committee comprising INTUC leader G. Sanjivreddy, IIT Kanpur Director SG Dhande, Delhi College of Engineering Director PB Sharma, and former Vice-Chancellor of BR Ambedkar Technical University SD Awale had pointed out that initially Rs.500 crores was needed for starting the university and another Rs.100 crores for running it annually.

Role for industrialists

Kranthi Kumar, however, wanted the industrialists to contribute 1.5 per cent, 1 per cent and .5 per cent depending on their size of company for the university, so that their workforce would benefit. Instead of depending on the Union or State Government entirely for funding as budgeted by the Committee a small beginning could be made, he said.

While 60 per cent of the seats must be reserved for workers in the industries, 15 per cent must go to unorganized sector workers, 10 per cent to traditional artisans in the rural areas and all of them should be imparted education both in Distance Mode and part-time mode, he said.
