‘Collective will a must for Central University’

Correspondent

The proposal had the support of all MPs and MLAs of the region, says Tribal Museum Director

’KORAPUT: The move by the Central Government to establish a Central University in Amarkantaka in Madhya Pradesh has evoked sharp reaction from people in the KBK region. The concept of a Central University in the form of a Rural University had gained momentum in the past. The move to establish Rural University at Kolabnagar in Koraput district had reached a stage where it was just a signature’s distance away. The State Government under the leadership of the then chief minister Biju Patnaik had given its consent, curriculum was prepared and modes of operation were also finalised, K. C. Panigrahy, Director of Tribal Museum said.

It would have been unique in its delivery system with the local touch to realize global aspects. Gaps in learning for the difference of languages was realized and curriculum was designed accordingly, he said.

The abandoned establishment that was left behind by the Upper Kolab Hydroelectric Project was the most suitable place to set up the university with the least expenditure.

The central office being in Upper Kolab, plans to establish its engineering wing at Sunabeda , agriculture studies at Gunupur and Nowrangpur with additional wing at Sundergarh and Keonjhar were appreciated even by planners at the central level.

Well designed structure to impart education in different trades suitable for rural youth to lead a life in the village was discussed with UGC and prepared by scholars.

The proposal had the support of all MPs and MLAs of the region carrying their signature on the recommendations submitted to the Government .

But the proposal could not be moved further for unknown reasons, Mr. Panigrahy said.

However with a collective political will combined with a strong aspiration from people a solution to the lost opportunities could be found, it was felt.
