Udhagamandalam: Under the aegis of the Department of Horticulture, a two-day training on ‘Organic Farming’ for Kurumba tribal farmers was organised at Nedugalcombai near here recently. The Director, Tribal Research Centre, Jakka Parthasarathy, said that a number of schemes were being implemented by the government for the benefit of the tribals. He urged the tribal communities to make the optimum use of them. The Field Botanist, Medicinal Plants Survey and Collection Centre, S. Rajan, said that tribals could augment their income to a significant extent if they took up cultivation of medicinal plants. The Coordinator, Earth Trust, Alex, said that by scientifically using biodynamic compost the soil could be rejuvenated. The Horticultural Officer, Soil Testing Laboratory, Rajendran, said that farmers should periodically take soil samples for analysis. The Training Assistant, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, S. Nataraj, said that tea growers should adopt the right method of plucking leaves and they should regularly prune the tea bushes. The Senior Research Fellow, Horticulture Research Station, Arun Kumar, urged the farmers to switch to biofertilizers. The Assistant Director of Horticulture, V. Ramsundar, presided over the function. Kurumba leader Nanjundan also spoke. A total of 26 Kurumba farmers participated in the training.
