Nua Golabandha fishermen families to be shifted finally

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: About 857 fishermen families of Nua Golabandha village under Berhampur tehsil in Ganjam district have agreed to get displaced for the expansion of the Army Air Defence College (ADC).

Model colony

These families would be rehabilitated at a proposed model fishermen’s colony at Kirtipur under Kanisi tehsil, said the Berhampur tehsildar

Sangram Panda. The state revenue department has already given the green signal for this rehabilitation project which would be taken up

at a cost of more than Rs 3 crores. "The proposed rehabilitation site would be at a distance of one km from the sea coast adhering to the norms of Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ)," said Mr Panda.

According to him the area for the project has already been earmarked near Kirtipur. It would have all basic amenities like

electricity, road communication, medical center etc. The sarpanch of the Nua Golabandh village, K.Rameya said the villagers

had agreed to the new rehabilitation package proposed by the State Government. These villagers were earlier opposed to displacement as

they were not satisfied with the rehabilitation package. About 237 families of this village were rehabilitated at Garampeta in 1998. But they are yet to get basic amenities after rehabilitation. The rest families of the village opposed displacement without rehabilitation with basic amenities.

It may be noted that most of the families of Nua Golabandha were devastated by a major fire in March. These families are now living in makeshift huts on the sea coast near the fire devastated village.

Around 2728 acres was provided to the Defence Ministry in two phases 1966 and 1978 for establishment of the ADC in 1984. Establishment of this unit needed displacement of all fishermen families of Nua Golabandha village. Displacement and rehabilitation process started in 1998 with 270 families displaced to Garampeta

. Rest families did not opt for displacement demanding better rehabilitation.
