KHAMMAM: The All India Kishan Mazdoor Sabha (AIKMS) central executive, which concluded its two-day meeting here on Thursday resolved to observe August 15 as the all India peasants protest day. AIKMS national president Haradev Singh Sandhu and general secretary Gade Diwakar said the Central government was out to implement the national farmers policy from August 15. The policy had several aspects, which would affect the interests of the peasants community. The new policy was more in favour of the multi nationals. Policies decried
They said that the UPA government, which had come into power with the support of the Left had been implementing the draft policies of the previous government. They opposed the allotment of agriculture lands for the SEZs. It would result in large-scale displacement. The AIKMS meet also wanted the land ceiling acts to be amended in order to ensure effective implementation of the land reforms. The AIKS demanded the government to implement the NREG programme to be implemented in all the districts of the country. Only 58 per cent of the funds meant for the implementation of the programme could be utilized. Though the Act had assured employment for a minimum of 100 days, those in need of work could not get more than 16 to 20 man days. The AIKMS leaders said that the government had failed to stop the farmers’ suicide in the country. The entire peasants community was in crisis thus adding to the number of suicide from the community. States like Punjab were also no exception to the suicide tendency.
