Anantapur
Thus far, no further: Police intercept CPI activists and leaders who were on their way to lay siege to the Collectorate in Anantapur on Thursday.
ANANTAPUR: The police foiled the Communist Party of India (CPI)’s bid to stage a protest and lay siege to the Collectorate here on Thursday by detaining party activists and leaders even before they reached the place. Arrests were also made at different places in the district when the party activists were on their way to Anantapur to participate in the protest here. In all, about 1,500 activists including district secretary of the party M.V. Ramana, State president of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham K. Ramakrishna, deputy secretary of the district C. Jaffer and others were arrested in Anantapur and hundreds at Gooty, Guntakal, Pamidi, Tadipatri, Garladinne and other places. However, they were released on personal surety later. Speaking after the release, Mr. Ramakrishna alleged that the Government was blaming the Left parties for mobilising the poor and creating law and order problem. He mentioned that it was only after repeated pressure was put on the Government by CPI that the latter had appointed eight-member Koneru Ranga Rao Committee to study the land issue in the State. The panel had studied 18 categories of lands and made 104 recommendations. The Government was not willing to make the recommendations public till it was forced by the Left parties, he said. He demanded the Government allot 3 cents of land for a house site and either 2.5 acres of wet land or 5 acre of dry land to each poor family. The Left parties will meet here on Friday on the issue of ‘bhoo poratam’ to decide the future course of action. If necessary, they would take up a joint struggle, he stated.
