‘Left waging joint land struggle’

Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Communist parties are waging a relentless battle to exert pressure on the State Government to provide food and shelter to the poorer sections, CPI Mahila Samakhya general secretary Pasya Padma said on Thursday.Speaking at the picketing of the Collectorate by CPI functionaries, Ms. Padma charged the State and Central Governments with failing to provide employment and housing to the poor. Poor people should wage a concerted struggle to ensure allotment of land and house sites, she said.

The Government was allotting thousands of acres to industrialists in special economic zones (SEZs) but was reluctant to allot house sites of 60 yards per poor family, she alleged. The land occupation struggle would be intensified if the justified demands were not conceded, she warned.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ignored his pre-poll promises given to the poor and failed to allot lands to them despite claims to purchase lands for the purpose, CPI district secretary G. Obulesu alleged. He demanded taking over of 26 lakh acres in hands of bigwigs and distribution of the land among poor.

Lathicharge flayed

He condemned lathicharges and booking of cases on agitators. He warned of putting up CPI party flags and occupation of lands in July second week, if the Government was adamant. CPI and CPI(M) would jointly stage land occupation struggle in Kadapa district in future, CPI(M) district secretary B. Narayana said. The Chief Minister was looking down at the land struggle and getting cases registered against poor persons, he alleged.

CPI district assistant secretary P. Krishnamurthy, city secretary G. Chandra, AITUC general secretary B. Ramaiah and leaders Abdul Khader and Basheerunnisa participated.
