Schools sans textbooks

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: After groundnut seeds, another acute shortage gripping Chittoor district is the scarcity of supply in school textbooks. Even after a week of the new academic year getting to a start, the district is yet to get its full quota of text books. This is despite a reported commitment by the department that it would make the books available on June 12-- the reopening day for the schools in the State after the summer vacation every year.

According to reports, against 32 lakh textbooks on different subjects and classes indented for with the Directorate of School Education by the District Educational Department, barely 17 lakh arrived at the Government bookstores in Tirupati. This, together with a closing stock of another 2 lakh books were despatched from Tirupati to all the mandal headquarters for distribution in turn to the schools in their respective territories as per their indent.

Reports further said, that as the assortment of text books despatched to different mandals were not sufficient to meet the full requirement of any school or any class or any subject, they were reportedly withheld and not distributed to schools causing a serious hardship to the students. In the absence of the text books, the teachers and the students were said to be rather helplessly whiling away their time .

Student woes

The worst hit are the Class 10 students who cannot afford to waste even a single day because of the heavy and tough syllabus they have before them in their run-up to the public examination due at the end of the year. Reports indicate that for the tenth class students, their mathematics, science, social science and English text books were yet to be distributed much to their anxiety and their parents who were desperately running from pillar to post daily for the textbooks.
