Depression over Bay of Bengal to cross coast today

High and mighty: With a depression forming off the Andhra coast, high tides were witnessed on the Visakhapatnam coast on Thursday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The South West monsoon which has set in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa got a boost with a depression forming over West Central Bay of Bengal and centred at about 430 km. east-south east of Kakinada on Thursday morning. It is likely to intensify further and move in a west-north westerly direction and cross the north Andhra coast between Narasapur and Visakhapatnam by Friday afternoon.

Due to this, coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Orissa might witness heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places during the next 48 hours.

Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre here, V.L. Prasada Rao, told The Hindu that ‘extreme’ rainfall (above 25 cm.) could occur in one or two places in Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari, Krishna and P rakasam districts during the next 48 hours.

Local cautionary signal No.3 has been hoisted at Bheemunipatnam, Kalingapatnam, Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam, Nizampatnam, Kakinada, Vodarevu and Krishnapatnam ports. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea, he said.

The depression helped in bringing more rain to the various parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh with Bobbili receiving 62.6 mm of rainfall till 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. It was 50.2 (all in mm) in Bhimadolu, 33 mm in Tuni, 20.6 in Perala, 17.6 in Salur, 17 in Amalapuram, 10 mm each in Gudur and Koderu, 9.4 in Pithapuram, 9 in Bhimavaram, 8.6 in Machilipatnam, 7.8 in Kalingapatnam, 5.8 in Kavali and 5.2 in Waltair. However, in Vizag airport the rainfall was a mere 2 mm.

Met officials said in Orissa rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places and warned of heavy to very heavy precipitation at isolated places. Local cautionary signal no.3 has been hoisted at Gopalpur, Puri and Paradip ports. Squally weather with easterly wind, speed reaching 50 to 60 kmph is likely along and off the South Orissa coast, they said.
