Jharkhand keen on hiring chopper

New Delhi: Apparently taking a cue from Chhattisgarh, naxal-hit Jharkhand too is keen on hiring a helicopter for use in anti-naxalite operations, particularly for evacuation of injured policemen and quick despatch of security forces.

The State Government has written to the Union Home Ministry to make the arrangement as it has done in the case of Chhattisgarh where the cost is to be borne under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) head.

Sources said the matter cropped up at review meetings during the recent visit of Additional Secretary (Naxal Management) in the Union Home Ministry Vinay Kumar to Raipur and Ranchi.

Both Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh have identical problems of dense forest areas making road transport difficult. MHA sources said that since the BSF Air Wing faced shortage of pilots, a Pawan Hans chopper could be hired and the helicopter could be shared by the neighbouring states of Bihar and Orissa.- PTI
