Badal saves MLAs from suspension

Staff Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: But for the intervention of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who heads the nearly three-month old Akali-BJP Government, all Congress legislators in the Punjab Assembly on Thursday would have faced suspension for unruly behaviour.Speaker N.S. Kahlon adjourned the House for an hour when the Congress created a din by beating “thalis” (steel plates) with spoons to protest the “failure” of the Govt. to implement a scheme to provide subsidised food to the people.

When the House reassembled, Minister Tikshan Sud introduced a resolution seeking the suspension of the Congress legislators.

While the Speaker admonished the Opposition and threatened to proceed according to the provisions of the law, Mr. Badal intervened in his capacity as Leader of the House and sought forgiveness on their behalf. He also directed the Minister to withdraw the resolution.

The trouble arose during zero hour when Leader of the Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal sought an assurance from the Chief Minister on immediate and unbiased implementation of the scheme to provide “Atta” (flour) and “Dal” (pulses) at subsidised rates, a promise made in the Dal’s election manifesto.

She demanded action against those who committed excesses on innocent people and those who victimised the “Premis” (followers) of the Dera Sacha Sauda.
