Shakir slipped accidentally as he ran after his footwear that got washed away in rain

HYDERABAD: A nine-year-old-boy Shakir, who slipped into a manhole as he was trying to catch his footwear that got washed way in rain water, was feared drowned at Musheerabad on Thursday night.

This was the second consecutive incident of rain claiming the life of a kid in the State capital. A 10-year-old girl Poonam got washed away on Wednesday while trying to rescue her sister when the latter fell in Afzalsagar nala and could not be traced till now.

Shakir’s father Hussain lives in Bahadurpura area and came along with his family to Medibawi basthi in Ramnagar to attend marriage of his close relative. While the elders were busy with the marriage arrangements, the kids were playing in the narrow street even as it rained heavily.

Shakir and another kid Rizwan Baig were playing in the knee-deep water in the street when the former lost his footwear. “The boy reportedly ran after his ‘slippers’ and apparently failed to notice an open manhole,” Musheerabad police station Sub-Inspector G. Ram Mohan Reddy told The Hindu.

Locals, family members of Shakir and relatives searched nook and corner of the street but could not find the boy. The police called in municipal Emergency Cell Squad and began search operations with the help of locals. Searches continued till late in the night. The Musheerabad police registered a case.
