Grey skies, and a light rain

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The city woke up to grey and overcast skies on Thursday, which set the tone for the rest of the day, marked by a considerable drop in day temperature and continuous drizzle.

While Nungambakkam received 1 cm rainfall, Meenambakkam recorded 8 mm rain between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Thursday.

A Meteorological department official said the rainfall in the city was the result of a depression formed over west-central bay, about 400 km southeast of Visakhapatnam on Thursday morning. The system was likely to intensify and move in a west northwesterly direction and cross north Andhra between Visakhapatnam and Narasapur by Friday afternoon, he said.

The maximum day temperature, which has been on the decline for the past two days, dipped to 26 degrees Celsius at both Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam on Thursday. On Wednesday, it was 33 degrees Celsius.

The director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre of Meteorological department S.R. Ramanan said such depression in June generally did not have any impact over Tamil Nadu or Chennai. This year, the pattern of depression had contributed to the showers in Chennai.
