Traffic jams to be tackled on top priority, says Chief Minister

Directions issued to officials to ease blockades


Encroachments on footpaths to be cleared immediately
Close coordination between departments urged

HYDERABAD: Expressing utter displeasure over the traffic bottlenecks persisting in the city, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy instructed officials concerned to ease the traffic jams before the monsoon fully sets in.

Dr. Reddy lamented that there was “absolutely no discipline in traffic leading to frequent blockades” and wanted the police and civic officials to accord top priority in ensuring smooth flow of traffic.

Traffic in the city had become a major problem and the situation was likely to worsen if urgent steps were not initiated, the Chief Minister told city Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) V.S.K. Kaumudi who called on him on Thursday.

Stringent steps

The officials have been asked to take stringent measures against people parking their vehicles on main roads by seizing the vehicles and slapping a fine on them. All the encroachments on footpaths needed to be cleared with immediate effect.

The departments concerned should ensure close coordination. in this regard. Dr. Reddy said the Government had already sanctioned 600 additional Home Guards. The Police Commissioner was asked to evaluate the requirement of Sub-Inspectors and Circle Inspectors so that new posts could be sanctioned.
