MCD rules out hike in property tax

Staff Reporter

Due to “considerable” delay in notification of the Municipal Valuation panel report

The report should have been notified by March this year: Vijender Gupta
MCD’s revenue to be increased by augmenting existing financial resources

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee Chairman, Vijender Gupta, on Thursday ruled out an increase in property tax rates due to “considerable” delay in notification of the Municipal Valuation Committee report.

Mr. Gupta said the report should have been notified by March this year so that objections could have been invited from citizens before implementing its recommendations. Since the report has been considerably delayed, it would be unjustified to implement it, he said, adding that the revenue of the civic body would be increased by augmenting existing financial resources.

The report recommended an increase in the number of colonies falling under A to F categories, while the number of colonies under the lowest ‘G’ category be decreased to 159 from the existing 967. It also recommends a substantial increase in the unit base values for all categories and a uniform rate of Rs. 150 per square metre for the rural areas.

Commenting on the recommendations of the committee, Mr. Gupta alleged that it had not explained the rationale behind reshuffling of colonies under various categories and an increase in the unit base values. He said a member of the committee had also dissented and alleged that the report presented before the MCD was different from the one prepared by the Valuation Committee.

Mr. Gupta said the committee had also recommended inclusion of veranda for the purpose of property tax assessment, but no reasons had been assigned for it.
