MEDICINE OR ENGINEERING?: Parents and students sitting during the COMED-K counselling in Bangalore on Thursday.
BANGALORE: Eight candidates were sent back for producing suspected fake documents at the Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET-2007) medical or dental seat selection process of the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK), which began here on Thursday. A total of 328 MBBS seats were selected by the candidates, although 900 seats were on offer in six sessions. Many candidates did not turn up because they had selected government quota seats offered at a much subsidised fee structure through the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell. While the seats in Bangalore colleges were almost filled up, 408 MBBS seats are available. Seventy per cent of the candidates were from outside the State. A majority of the eight candidates with fake documents were from Rajasthan, said a top COMEDK official. The fingerprints of three candidates did not match with the application records while there was one case of mismatch of photograph. The others simply walked out when their original marks cards were sought for verification. The first seat under the COMEDK quota was selected by a student who opted for Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore. Incidentally, this college was not included in the CET matrix for the admission round as the Medical Council of India (MCI) did not approve it on time. The government quota seats in this college will be offered during the CET casual vacancy round. Last year, COMED-K detected 20 cases of malpractice. This year, it has decided to even go up to the CBSE zonal office in Chennai to ascertain the authenticity of the XII standard marks cards. With no upper age limit specified, even a 28-year-old candidate appeared for the counselling and selected a seat. He had a high COMEDK rank but his interest in medicine was triggered by his medico wife. There was some confusion in the morning when the consortium returned demand drafts with wrong fee denominations.
