SPIRITED STIR: Members of women self-help groups stage a protest in Maraimalai Nagar on Wednesday,
TAMBARAM: Over 50 women members of self-help groups staged a demonstration at Maraimalai Nagar on Wednesday, urging the Kancheepuram district administration and government agencies to shift the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlet in their area.
Representatives of Maraimalai Nagar Women Self-Help Groups Federation staged the demonstration outside the shop located at the Paavendhar Salai-Tiruvalluvar Salai junction in the township. Highlighting the fact that they had been protesting the location of the liquor outlet ever since it was started in 2004, the liquor shop was functioning from a rented premise in a commercial complex belonging to an MLA of the Pattali Makkal Katchi.
The women said that as the shop was located at an important commercial hub in the township, almost all those passing that way felt embarrassed.
Autorickshaw drivers, traders, school students, teachers, owners of marriage halls and hospitals and others had given representations to the district administration to shift the shop.
